February 29, 2012. This webinar that investigates the relationships and distinctions between artisanal and commercial mining and the impacts of SEC policies on the sector and the livelihoods of local people, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (1hr)
Presenters:
- Operations Officer, World Bank Oil, Gas, and Mining Department
Michael Jarvis - Program Leader, World Bank Governance for Extractive Industries
Peter Veit - Project Manager, Equity, Poverty, and Environment Initiative, World Resources Institute
Anne-Gaelle Javelle - Associate, Institutions and Governance Program, World Resources Institute
Note: The mining group Rio Tinto was mentioned in this webinar as one of the companies holding titles in protected areas. WRI later found that the boundaries of one of the protected areas (the Okapi Reserve) were incorrect in one geodataset, which accounted for the overlap. Rio Tinto’s holdings in the Democratic Republic of Congo do not encroach upon any protected area.
