Man with mineralsThis community space is to provide follow-up discussion from the February 29, 2012 webinar the Costs of Mining: Artisanal vs commercial and global policy with local impact. It will also provide opportunities to explore in more depth the crossroads between artisanal and corporate mining, specifically around the case study of the Democratic Republic of Congo which is expecting huge changes to its mining industry brought about from recent legislature passed in the United States. Other nations around the world are watching closely to see the impacts of this transboundary policy, which also influenced the presidential elections in the DRC.

U.S. Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (2010): Opportunities for the Mining Sector in the DRC (presentation revised)

Note: The mining group Rio Tinto was mentioned in this webinar as one of the companies holding titles in protected areas. WRI later found that the boundaries of one of the protected areas (the Okapi Reserve) were incorrect in one geodataset, which accounted for the overlap. Rio Tinto’s holdings in the Democratic Republic of Congo do not encroach upon any protected area.
