Do you know of examples of how ICT tools are being used in the water sector? (5 answers)

Smart Meters and ICT web tools are examples of ICT for Water that are much likely to benefit both utilities and final consumers as well as to contribute to better use of scarce water resources. In particular, they will empower end users with real time information, increase their awareness, and stimulate positive behavioral changes.

Does anyone know of examples of these programs that are being piloted in the field? What successes and lessons learned are being observed? And what does this mean for the future?

the world bank has done some work with using a mobile app to map/catalog water points in Liberia (FLOW) and it seemed like an interesting idea. just one idea that comes to mind....

I found an article on some examples of ICT for Water Resource Management that includes the following examples.

- eGov features India’s Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) that uses GIS mapping and GPS enabled mobile applications for planning and monitoring rainwater harvested agricultural land.

- MeKongInfo--of the Mekong River Basin in Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam--houses a database and online discussion that is sponsored by the Mekong River Commission (MRC).

- AgWater Solutions is collaborating with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and others in Ethiopia through workshops to address small reservoirs and groundwater systems investment.

- African Water Facility’s Community Water Management Project in Zambia works with farmers to increase productivity by reducing their reliance on rain-fed farming.

I wonder if anyone has experience with these or similar projects and could help me learn more about their successes and lessons learned.

Can ICT Improve Clean Water Delivery Systems in Slums? Lessons from Kibera

Water is scarce, costly, and contaminated in Kibera, Nairobi -- one of Africa's largest urban slums. On good days, the women and children spend just under an hour finding clean water in their community. On bad days, the price of water increases tenfold and the search takes all day. Often, people ask jokingly whether it is water or cholera they are buying.

Many slums like Kibera lack access to clean drinking water, but they don't lack access to mobile phones. This is the insight behind M-Maji, a start-up non-profit project that uses mobile phones to empower communities with better information about water availability, price, and quality. This seminar will introduce the M-Maji system, and describe some of the challenges to designing for such a complex social environment.Background: M-Maji emerged from the Designing Liberation Technologies course in the Stanford d.school, which focused on using mobile phone technology for health improvement in Kibera. M-Maji has since received funding to run a pilot from the Program on Liberation Technologies and the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at Stanford

  There is a research group at Oxford that is currently working on a few projects related to the use of mobile communication technologies (phones and networks) in the urban and rural water sector. The main publications at the moment are reports:
