Lowaeli Damalu was one of eight USFWS MENTOR Fellows in 2008-2009 from Kenya, Southern Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda working to address the illegal bushmeat exploitation in the Eastern Africa region.
As a MENTOR Fellow from Tanzania, Lowaeli Damalu completed her bushmeat field assessment on illegal bushmeat trade in Tanzania's urban centers of Morogoro and Kilombero Districts. Lowaeli Damalu worked with MENTOR Fellow Andimile Martin on a protein alternative partnership project around Serengeti National Park. Lowaeli and Martin also working as a team on cross border issues with MENTOR Fellow Evanson Kariuki, who focused on bushmeat awareness and law enforcement in Maasai Mara, Kenya.
Lowaeli Damalu has worked with the Wildlife Division under the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism for 17 years. Within the Wildlife Division, she has worked as a law enforcement officer, licensing officer, and instructor at Pasiansi Wildlife Training Institute. She holds a first degree B.Sc. in Wildlife Conservation Science and Zoology from the University of Dar es Salaam-Tanzania. She has a Diploma and Certificate in Wildlife Management from the College of African Wildlife Management- Mweka, Tanzania. During her undergraduate studies, Lowaeli did a special project on "Trophy Hunting Sustainability in Tanzania specifically on African elephant hunting: a case of Selous Game Reserve".
